American Volunteer Scholarships (Program)
This program encourages, recognizes and rewards public service work of area high school students.
College scholarships for $500 will be given to graduating seniors of each high school graduating class in 11 greater Houston-area, northern corridor school districts.
By engaging in community volunteer activities, you can be elgible for these college scholarships, as well as special recognition at the end of your senior year.
How does the program work?
1. Contact a representative at the NHC financial aid office and inquire about possible agencies and organizations needing volunteers.
2. Get a form to complete.
3. Notify the organization you wish to volunteer.
4. Do the volunteer work. Be sure to take the volunteer documentation form with you.
5. When you complete the volunteer work, a supervisor needs to sign the form.
If you regularly volunteer at one particular place (a school, church, hospital), you can send one form to cover a month's volunteer hours.
Please report all hours monthly throughout the year. School counselors will post regular reports on all documented service hours. This will allow any student to verify that hours have been received and recorded. Hours may be verified through
Jan. 31. Any hours reported between Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 will not be available for verification. No reports will be accepted after Feb. 15 for the current year.
From time to time, service organizations will sponsor workdays or specific short-term projects. In these situations, documentation forms listing information necessary to volunteer will be left in the vertical files.
