Choose Key Words
Before you begin looking for information, select up to 3 key words (or main concepts) to begin your research. To save time, list related key words to use for back up information searches.

Example:
KEY WORDS: Vincent Van Gogh, Starry Night
RELATED WORDS: Impressionism; 19th Century Painting; Painters, Netherlands
Locate Information
Search for information from books through the Library Catalog.
Select Subject Words option from menu
Enter search terms for your topic
Example: Van Gogh
Locate items related to your topic in the catalog
Determine which library owns them
Locate NHC items in the library or request items from other libraries using your library card number
Consider checking Oxford Art Online on or off-campus, Dictionary of Art, (REF N31 .D5 1996) or World Encyclopedia of Art (REF N 31 .4833) for background information

Additional books on your topic may be available through netLibrary (NOTE: requires free registration to view books - also available off campus with valid library card), local library catalogs, and WorldCat, an international library catalog - also available off campus.
Search for Information from Periodical Articles in Magazines, Newspapers, etc.

Artstor -a digital library offering coherent collections of art images and descriptive rich information.

ProQuest Databases - in the library, and on or off-campus computers via the Web
Enter key words for your topic separated by "and"
Example: Van Gogh and Starry Night

Academic Search Complete - in the library, and on or off-campus computers via the Web
Enter key words for your topic separated by "and"
Example: Van Gogh and Starry Night

Other periodical databases are available via the arts & humanities databases to locate other articles on your topic.

Search Databases from Home!
Off-Campus Access Databases are available from home via the Web using your library card number.
Search for Information on Web pages
Google search engine and Google Image Finder
Include all words in search by putting spaces between words - assumes "and" between words
Put quotation marks around phrases
Example: "Starry Night"

AltaVista image search engine
Use + or AND to combine all words
Put quotations marks around phrases Example: "Van Gogh" +"Starry Night"

Cite Sources
Keep a running list of information sources used while you research. Review the Quick Reference Guide to the Chicago Manual of Style (from Ohio State University Library) and MLA citation guides to put your sources in the format requested by your instructor.
