  • Continuing Education - Receive CE credits online by studying articles from journals such as the American Journal of Nursing, MCN, Nursing Research and more.
  • ceWeb - Register and take electronic tests over the Internet. Receive feedback and contact hours immediately. Charges are incurred when tests are taken.
  • Continuing Education Seminars - Locate seminars by location or topic from the NurseWeek or check their links to related CE resources.
  • Continuing Nursing Education - From the University of Washington School of Nursing, a list of classes available through homestudy. Consider both the Independent Study and the Education Online links.
  • Learn Well Online from LearnWell Resources Inc, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation.

  • Diversity Rx - sponsored by the The National Conference of State Legislatures and health-related organizations - provides information related to meeting the health care needs of immigrants, refugees, and other diverse groups
  • EthnoMed - from Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington contains medical and cultural information on East African, Southeast Asian and other populations.
  • Culture Clues - increase your awareness of diverse cultures with these tips from the University of Washington.
Diseases and Specialties
General Clinical Sites
  • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality - From the NIH, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Quick Reference Guides for Clinicians, and Consumer Guides.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - The journals Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report(MMWR) and Emerging Infectious Diseases are on this site as well as extensive guidelines on infection control, immunizations, and hazardous substances.
  • Physical Exam Checklists - An online textbook offering basic instructions on how to take a complete history and do a physical, with diagrams.
  • HospitalWeb - A growing list of hospitals on the Web.
  • Interactive Patient - This teaching tool offers a case with a chief complaint to the user who then has to interact with the patient requesting additional history, performing a physical exam, and reviewing laboratory data and x-rays.
  • Online Clinical Calculators - Converts patient weight in pounds or temperature in Fahrenheit to kilograms and degrees Celsius. Also available are other electronic tools to calculate body surface area, body mass index, anion gap, and creatinine clearance.
  • Tufts University Nutrition Navigator - A database of reviewed and evaluated nutrition web sites. The site is organized by interest category.
  • Virtual Hospital - From the University of Iowa contains information a a number of medical specialities and includes teaching files, guidelines, patient simulations, and multimedia textbooks.

These are links to job finding and career information sites on the Internet.

Journal Indexes
These indexes can be used to locate journal articles on a nursing topic. If Lone Star College-North Harris Library does not subscribe to the journal, the article may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan request forms can be obtained from a Reference Librarian.

Use the health & medicine online databases on/off campus to locate nursing-related articles.

  • PubMed - Search Medline's nine million citations to medical journals with links to participating online journals.
  • NursingCenter's Library - Find current articles on clinical topics in more than 30 trusted nursing journals.
Journals Online (collections & direct links)

The list contains links to selected medical and nursing journals on the Internet. They feature full-text articles, abstracts, or tables of contents. Call the library to see if we subscribe to a particular journal, so you can review complete articles.

These are links to sites which deal with medical ethics.

  • American College of Physicians Ethics Manual from the April 1, 1998 Annals of Internal Medicine "is intended to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice and medical research and to describe and explain underlying principles of decision making."
  • Bioethics Topics from the University of Washington School of Medicine provides discussion on practical issues such as "end-of-life issues" and "neonatal ICU issues." See also, Bioethics Tools for case studies and principles related to bioethics.

These are search programs that search only for medical information.
  • MedExplorer - A directory of medical sites on the Internet.
  • Medsite provides a subject guide and search engine for medical and health-related Internet sites.

These are sites which contain numerous links to medical information on the Internet.

  • Argus Clearinghouse - Nursing provides nursing subject guides rated by librarians.
  • Digital Librarian: Health & Medicine Sites - includes a large collection of related sites organized by a New York librarian.
  • Healthfinder - Maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this website is a health related gateway to federal web sites and those set up by states, local governments, universities and not-for-profit groups.
  • MEDLINEplus from the National Library of Medicine
  • MedWeb - Comprehensive subject listing of biomedical Internet resources from Emory University.
Patient Education
Pharmaceutical Information
  • Drug Formulary - Enter a drug brand name to produce a table showing the generic name, the formulation--tablet, oral suspension, etc.--dosage, and cost.
  • Nurses's PDR Resource Center - latest drug news and search the drug database from Thomson Learning, an educational materials company
  • RxList - A searchable drug index that includes interactions for the most commonly used agents.
  • U.S. Pharmacopeia Drug Information (from the organization which establishes standards for the manufacture and distribution of drugs and related products in the United States) includes side-effects, precautions, and links to related information sources.
