How are the student leaders chosen?
Student leaders are chosen based on a recommendation from their professors. These leaders are selected on the basis of their success in the targeted couse meaning they earned an "A" or "B" in the course. Student leaders also have to have the ability to interact well with others and conduct study groups comfortably.
Do the student leaders receive any extra help or training?
Yes, in addition to the skills they have demonstrated in success in the course, they are trained in how to plan and conduct study sessions to provide the most benefit. The student leaders will attend the class meetings, meet with the instructor, develop lesson plans for study sessions, and serve as model students of the course. Activities will be developed by the leaders to facilitate development of skills and learning of course content.
What are SI Student leaders' responsibilities?
The student leader will have attended the class and will have activities planned to facilitate understanding, comprehension, and retention of the content of the course. Student leaders will not provide class notes for students who have been absent from class. It is up to the student to obtain the notes from another student taking the class. The SI study sessions are not tutoring sessions, and the student leaders will not review and re-teach content material. The student leaders plan activities to facilitate the learning of the content by use of study strategies.
